Manometry

Manometry testing measures the force and coordination of smooth muscle within the body. Depending on a patient’s symptoms, there are two types of manometry testing.

Esophageal Manometry

Measures the strength and function of the muscles in the esophagus (the “food pipe”) which work to push food and liquids from the mouth down to the stomach.

This procedure can be used to evaluate the cause of reflux of stomach acid and contents back into the esophagus, to determine the cause for problems with swallowing, or to evaluate patients with chest pain which may be coming from the esophagus.

Anorectal Manometry

Measures the pressures of the anal sphincter muscles, the sensation in the rectum, and the reflexes that are needed for normal bowel movements.

This procedure can be used to evaluate the strength of the sphincter muscles are and whether they relax correctly when passing a stool. It provides helpful information in treating patients with severe constipation or fecal incontinence.

Please contact any of our offices for more specific information on any of the Manometry services offered.
